Davies Name Change

At a Congregational Meeting on June 2, 2019, the congregation voted to change the name of the community from Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church to Davies Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

It was agreed by a “super majority” that the change from “church” to “congregation” created a more inclusive name that recognizes and welcomes faith traditions that don’t use “church” terminology. This includes Jews, Muslims, and Hindus, as well as humanists and atheists. At the same time, the word “congregation” does not in any way exclude those from a Christian background.

As always, this decision was made in the light of our Seven Principles and the six Sources of our Living Tradition. The congregation’s decision to keep the name “Davies” was a conscious reaffirming of the community’s gratitude to Rev. A. Powell Davies, whose work and legacy will be lifted up throughout the coming year.
