Slave-owner Descendant and Slave Descendant Talk

January 18, 2014 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

TheForageHouseAuthors Tess Taylor and Reishar Raney will read from Taylor’s book, “The Forage House” at 3 p.m. Signed copies of the book, a collection of poems concerning Taylor’s discovery of her family’s legacy of slave-owning, will be available.

As a descendant of Thomas Jefferson and other slave-owning families, Taylor grapples with the repercussions of that practice down through the generations. Raney, a descendant of slaves including Thomas Jefferson’s uncle, joins in the discussion.

“There’s a wonderful group whose work I follow, the group called Coming to the Table, where the descendants of enslavers and the descendants of enslaved sit down and talk to one another,” Taylor said. “In some cases people with actual familial connections find one another and reckon with their shared history.”

This event is free and open to the public.
